What does culture mean?
Law cannot build culture. Winning hearts and minds builds culture.
We cannot effectively legislate a virtuous society or world. To achieve peace, we must voluntarily win enough of our fellow humans’ hearts and minds. — Marc J Victor
Values can begin in our lives through parenting. Children who are not taught the “kindergarten rules” (keep your hands to yourself and don’t take another’s toy) are more likely the ones who end up in the prison system as adults.
Teaching the Legal Principle in this sense begins at home.
In our personal lives, we might take lessons from Stoicism. Stoic philosophy focuses on what one can control in their life. It encourages one to act in line with the Moral Principle, that is with high character and regardless of circumstances, viewing challenges as opportunities.
When we group our challenges and make adversaries through them, we risk becoming tribal in nature. Excessive tribalism is contrary to an inclusive culture. Instead, we can think of humans as a species as part of the same tribe.
We must immediately start viewing each other as treasured members of the same tribe, our human tribe. — Marc J Victor
